The prominent Shiite religious leader Ali Sistani said in Iraq Tuesday prohibiting the killing of Iraqis, particularly Sunnis, and he urged Shiites to protect their fellow Sunnis.
Sistani banned the spilled Iraqi blood in general, Sunnis in particular. His statement was made at a meeting with a delegation of Sunni clerics from southern and northern Iraq.
The religious authorities in Najaf are here to attend the first national conference for Ulemaa Shiites and Sunnis.
Sistani called on Shiites to protect their fellow Sunnis, according to Sheikh Khaled Al-Mulla, head of the authority Ulemaa southern Iraq, noting that the fatwa from Sistani would have a positive impact at the national level.
"I am the servant of all Iraqis, there is no difference between a Sunni, a Shitte or Kurdish or Christian," Al-Mulla Sistani quoted as saying during the meeting.
Sistani has warned the Sunni clerics about the plans of the 'enemies' of planting seeds of discord among the Iraqis.
